Last night, the official opening night of the 2017 Luminato Festival took place at Toronto’s David Pecaut Square. For this season, the grand opening of the annual arts and culture festival paid homage to First Nations performers. With a theme of Tributaries, the focus of the night was traditional Indigenous music and arts. The evening’s artists took to The Famous Spiegeltent, a 1920s era historical stage which was erected at the square especially for the festival.

Tributaries was presented by creative producer Denise Bolduc and associate producer Erika A. Iserhoff, who joined forces with Native Women in the Arts. The lineup of performances featured a stunning show from First Nations singer Laura Grizzlypaws, who graced the stage in a beautiful red traditional outfit. Grizzlypaws’ soulful and passionate voice filled David Pecaut Square, with its haunting melody. With meaningful lyrics which spoke of love and life, Grizzlypaws belted out a song which captivated her audience, seated on the grass before her.

Grizzlypaws’ set was followed by a dramatic Red Tidal Resurgence performance, which featured a group of female First Nations singers. The ladies on stage included Iskwe, Jennifer Kreisberg, Cheri Maracle, Leanne Betasamosake Simpson and Tanya Tagaq. Meanwhile, a 7-piece band filled the open air with notes from the cello, viola, drums, bass and French horn.

Overall, the opening night of Luminato honoured Canada’s First Nations people in true artistic form. From the pumping beats to deep vocals to intricate costumes, the evening kicked off the summer festival on a high note- literally.

Luminato runs until June 25. Read our guide to this year’s festival in the Summer 2017 issue of Real Style Magazine.

Although we’ve had a couple of seasons to familiarize ourselves with the bevy of beautiful blush tones, Pantone Universe’s Pale Dogwood is the latest take on this colour trend. This subtle pink colour, which is sometimes colloquially referred to as “Millenial pink”, features soft dusty rose undertones. Along with being a beautiful shade for your Summer 2017 fashion and beauty looks, pale dogwood can look just as gorgeous at home. If you’re wondering how to decorate with this colour, we’ve curated a few decorative ideas to inspire your space now.

Try painted wooden shutters for a bathroom makeover: With countless décor lovers searching for ways to upgrade their bathroom, trendy wooden shutters can offer the dose of colour that you need. Paint these shutters in a shade of pale dogwood, for a contrasting effect against a white porcelain bathtub. Meanwhile, an accent wall in this new Pantone Universe tone can complete the look.

Turn to an accent pillow: If you’re not quite ready to repaint an entire wall to match this latest colour trend, you can always step cautiously into a pale dogwood palette. The easiest way to master this look is with a chic accent pillow. Styled with crisp white bed linens and a light wooden nightstand, a pale pink cushion can immediately seize the eye.

Elevate your home office: For those who work from home, the study or home office is an essential part of the home. As opposed to staid, corporate tones of white and beige, pale dogwood is the perfect touch. Decorate with a slender plastic chair in this subdued pink hue, along with pale pink roses in a matching ceramic vase.

Although vintage influences have certainly made their way onto the season’s catwalks, it seems that the world of interior design is also drawing from these influences. For Summer 2017, the daybed has returned as a must-have furnishing for your humble abode. Often considered the love child of a chaise longue and a regular bed, daybeds are a signature element of mid-century modern décor. If you want to take your design cues from the past, look no further than this hot home accent. Here’s how to incorporate the daybed into your home sweet home.

Think abstract: For a modern day take on the daybed, try combining the trend with a black and white colour scheme. The look of patterned black and white cushions can instantly bring a basic black daybed to life. Meanwhile, swirling abstract wallpaper, gleaming white floors and a slender white table can wrap up your design.

Think minimalist: Perhaps loud and proud prints aren’t quite your taste, and you prefer subtlety instead. If you’re a minimalist at heart, a wooden daybed with plush black seating can evoke vibes of comfort and simplicity. Meanwhile, white exposed brick walls, leafy green plants and hanging wall art complement your daybed flawlessly.

Think green: For a more colourful approach, consider adding an emerald-coloured daybed to your space. Paired with black and white patterns and dark neutral pillows, this is a timeless colour scheme which can even bring you into the autumn. To keep your room looking fresh, turn to stark white walls to allow your verdant furniture to truly pop.
